About Business of Medicine 101

Practical, plain-English guides to the business side of medicine, written by a physician who built it.

Why this site exists

Medical training teaches physicians how to care for patients in remarkable depth. It rarely teaches how a contract is structured, how a claim is paid, how a practice survives its first year or how a procedure suite is financed. Most physicians learn those lessons the expensive way, after they have signed.

Business of Medicine 101 is meant to close part of that gap for practicing physicians, fellows finishing training and practice owners. Each guide explains one topic in plain English, ends with the questions worth asking, and lists the public sources behind its factual statements, mainly from CMS, the HHS Office of Inspector General and other official bodies.

How to use the guides

The guides are educational. They describe laws and payer rules in general terms, and those rules differ by state and change often. Use them to prepare for conversations with your own attorney, CPA, financial advisor and billing professionals, not as a substitute for them. The site carries no advertising, no tracking and no affiliate links, and it does not endorse products or companies.
